Pioneer Hi-Bred to build new research center in Ithaca
Construction for a new Pioneer Hi-Bred research center
in Ithaca is expected to begin soon.
In 1986, the first such research center on North
Wisner Road was established but it's not big enough.
The company now has eight full- time and two part-time
workers at the center, in addition to lots of seasonal
workers, said Julie Kenney, a spokeswoman for Pioneer
Hi-Bred.
With the cooperation of local farmers, Pioneer's
employees test corn hybrids.
"This new research center will further expand
our efforts to provide products that fit the specific
needs of farmers in this region," Randy Minton,
a Pioneer business director, said in a press release.
The new research facility will be built in an industrial
park in Ithaca and will be about 22,000 square feet.
It will contain labs, administrative offices and conference
rooms.
"Pioneer will maintain operations at both research
centers when the new center opens in the middle of
next year," Kenney said.
Activities will be split between the two facilities
and the work will expand, she said.
"The new center will expand corn product development
and testing efforts for farmers in northern environments,"
she said.
Kenney said that the company plans to hire up to
10 people within the next three years.

Cartridges Are Us now Gratiot's #2 Private Employer
Inkjet Cartridge Remanufacturer Hired 150 Employees
Since January 2009
Cartridges
Are Us' new Union Street location in Ithaca enabled
the company to hire 150 additional employees since
January of this year, bringing total local employment
to 229. The company is now Gratiot County's second
largest private employer, and the City of Ithaca's
largest employer.
After departing from its Mexicali, Mexico plant due
to harsh climate conditions that were prematurely
drying out ink cartridges, the company chose Gratiot
County over Illinois to stay and expand. Greater Gratiot
Development, Inc (GGDI), in partnership with the Michigan
Economic Development Corporation and the City of Ithaca,
put together an incentive package that helped make
Ithaca a competitive location for the company to retain
and expand its inkjet operations. An environmental
investigation was also coordinated by GGDI through
the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority of the County
of Gratiot (BRACG) to ensure the site was environmentally
sound for redevelopment purposes. CAU's management
team noted that without the assistance of GGDI and
the availability of the Gratiot Community Airport,
the expansion project would not have been possible.
In addition to its global customers, many local dealers
and retailers now sell inkjet cartridges supplied
by Cartridges Are Us. Please visit www.clovertech.com

5 Community Input Meetings scheduled for Countywide
Master Plan
Public opinion will help shape planning for the
Gratiot Community's future
Community
leaders need your help. Gratiot County units of government
are working together to jointly develop a master plan.
The master plan provides the foundation for our zoning
and land use planning. The master plan also sets the
direction for local units in planning for the future
including identification of community issues and service
levels. This master plan will need to be approved
by each individual municipality. This means the plan
must meet the needs of each unit of government to
meet our legal requirements.
By working together, we can make better plans for
the region. We can dream a little bigger and break
down some of the artificial barriers we faced in the
past. To do this we need the assistance of informed
community leaders, such as you, to participate in
a community forum. We will be hosting five forums
at different locations throughout the county. Below
is a link to a flyer listing the dates, times and
locations of the forum. Please attend at least one
of these sessions and actively provide your recommendations
for our future. We look forward to your participation.
If you have any questions, please contact Don Schurr
at 989-875-2083 or Phil Moore at 989-463-8336.

GGDI Celebrates 30 Years of Collaborative Economic Development
Key note address provided by Jim Epolito, President
& CEO, MEDC
(Excerpts
from 10/11/08 Morning Sun article)
Leaders from around the community and state converged
in Gratiot County to mark 30 successful years of collaborative
economic development at a luncheon held at Town &
Country Recreation in Ithaca, October 10th, 2008.
GGD President Don Schurr provided a short look back
into the past, beginning with the year 1965. In that
year, Gratiot was a dynamic county, with heavy manufacturing
companies and a strong agricultural base. Just 10
years later, "the wheels were falling off"
and 2,000 jobs were lost, with more losses to come,
he said. The automotive jobs, the jobs in the chemical
plant, the shoe factory and mobile home industry had
disappeared. Unemployment was at 21 percent.
Just a few years later, local business people and
officials formed Greater Gratiot Development, which
in the following decades, helped create a net total
of 2,269 jobs.
GGD Chairman Jim Wheeler told the crowd about Merrill
Fabricators. New to the county, it's a company that
makes welded parts for a wide variety of industries.
It's located in the former Oxford Automotive plant
in Alma and employs 175 people. He said that once
Oxford Automotive closed, he thought, "We'd never
see anyone there. It was a miracle. But it did not
happen by accident. If it weren't for Greater Gratiot
Development, they wouldn't be here."
In his keynote address, James Epolito, President
& CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation
stressed teamwork, bipartisanship and collaboration
as things that work in economic development. Praising
Gratiot's collaborative efforts, he pointed to the
cities of Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor as positive examples
for their efforts in planning ahead and achieving
economic growth.
With local governments struggling financially, GGD
Chairman James Wheeler noted that a new fund has been
established at the Gratiot County Community Foundation
for the purpose of supporting economic development
efforts.

Gratiot Medical Center unveils $56M, 120-bed Patient
Tower
State of the art facility offers expanded care for
mid Michigan residents, industry
Community
members got a first look at the completion of Gratiot
Medical Center's new 140,000-square-foot patient tower
on Sunday, August 24th. The open house featured a
ribbon cutting ceremony and tours of the new patient
rooms. The new state-of-the-art Medical Center addition
is located at 300 East Warwick Drive in Alma.
“This addition to the Medical Center will bring enhanced
patient care services to the community,” said Mark
E. Bush, president of Gratiot Medical Center. “Along
with bringing the most advanced services and technology
to the area, making the Medical Center a comfortable
setting is a priority. We want to ensure we are providing
the best patient experience along with top-notch medical
care.”
Once
the move to the new tower is complete, many of the
areas in the existing building will be renovated and
some departments will change floors. Almost all of
the existing semi-private rooms will be converted
to private rooms.
“Our donors have been extremely dedicated to assisting
Gratiot Medical Center in our mission for improving
and preserving the health and well-being of the communities
we serve,” said Bush. “Our capital campaign 'Yours
for Life. Building on Tradition' raised more than
$3.5 million and greatly impacted the building project.”
This campaign was the largest fund-raising campaign
in the Medical Center’s history. More than 900 donors
– board of trustees, medical staff, employees, volunteers,
area foundations, community members and business leaders
– gave to the campaign.
Five major donations (>$125,000) were received from
Garr Tool, The Herbet H. & Grace A. Dow Foundation,
Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation, Gratiot Medical Center
Auxiliary, Gratiot Medical Center Employees, and Ken
and Lois Luneack and family. “We extend a special
thank you to our capital campaign committee who played
an integral role in supporting the Medical Center
through our campaign,” said Bush. “The campaign committee
consisted of co-chairs – Jeffrey Barker, Timothy Miller,
James Wheeler; committee chairs – Paul Lux, Alma;
Richard Abbott, Ithaca; Brad Vibber, St. Louis; Dale
Weburg, Breckenridge; and, 45 employees that co-chaired
the employee campaign.”
The Gratiot Medical Center has been caring for Gratiot
County residents since 1955. More than 125 physicians
and mid-level practitioners serve on the active medical
staff in 22 different medical specialties. There are
more than 1300 employees and 250 volunteers.
In addition to specialty services commonly found
in community hospitals, Gratiot also provides a full
range of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services,
a walk in urgent-care clinic, home medical equipment,
home nursing, hospice, urgent care, psychiatry, and
special centers for Bariatric Surgery, Sleep Disorders,
and Pain Management. The hospital is accredited by
the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations and was named one of the nation's 100

quality, comprehensive health care throughout the
middle of Michigan and beyond. Its vision is to provide
a lifetime of trusted care through coordinated hospitals,
home care, nursing homes, and urgent care, as well
as through physician services and advanced medical
technology.

Monosem Inc. to locate in Ithaca Industrial Park
Precision planter manufacturer will boost multiple
area firms
Kansas-based
Monosem Inc. announced its decision today to invest
in a new manufacturing facility in the Ithaca Industrial
Park in Ithaca, Gratiot County, Michigan. Monosem
is a global manufacturer/distributor of precision
planters for the agricultural sector. The company
expects to create 2 to 5 direct jobs this year, and
up to 25 within 5 years.
Tony Bakker, President of Monosem Inc. notes, “Our
Monosem Representative Loren Roslund and his wife
Becky started talking to me two years ago about the
possibility of opening a satellite facility in Ithaca.
After seeing how well a temporary site worked out
during the 07-08 season, we were convinced to purchase
a building. It is an added value that Ithaca is located
in a strategic area for the distribution of Monosem
planters. We look forward to the continued growth
of Monosem in the agricultural community of Gratiot
County and Central Michigan.”
In addition to the direct economic impact of its
assembly facility, the company anticipates supplier
relationships with at least eight local firms supplying
steel, wheels/tires, fasteners, machining, welding,
sandblasting, and powder coating. New tractors will
also likely be sold throughout the region to accommodate
the specialized planters.
Don Schurr, Greater Gratiot Development, Inc. President
comments, “It is truly remarkable how well Monosem
fits into Gratiot County’s emerging agricultural-industrial
cluster. We expect multiple area firms to experience
significant boosts as a result of Monosem’s investment.”
The company expects to begin production within one
month.
The Ithaca facility will be Monosem’s fourth North
American assembly facility, adding to its Kansas,
Georgia, and Mexico locations. The Ithaca Industrial
Park is a Michigan Certified Business Park. Gratiot

Gratiot Collaborative Group Receives Grant for Innovative
Master Planning Initiative
LIAA’s Partnerships for Change: Sustainable Communities
Grant to provide professional services and technical
assistance
At
least twenty-one units of government within Gratiot
County, Michigan have embarked on the state’s first
collaborative countywide master plan, and a $67,000
service grant from the Traverse City-based Land Information
Access Association’s (LIAA) “Partnerships for Change:
Sustainable Communities” program will boost the effort.
Heather Seyfarth, Community Planner for the LIAA remarked,
"We were very impressed with the grant application
from the partnering units of government in Gratiot
County. A county-wide master plan generated by local
jurisdictions through cooperative efforts truly embodies
the mission of the Partnerships for Change Sustainable
Communities program. Moreover, we believe that a plan
of this nature is the first of its kind in Michigan."
Local government leaders came together several months
ago to discuss the concept of a joint master plan
between two cities and a township, but the scope quickly
expanded as additional local government leaders expressed
interest in participating. Updated master plans are
mandatory for every unit of government in Michigan,
and most units spend thousands of dollars creating
individual plans and updating them every five years.
In an effort to save taxpayer dollars and create a
master plan that embodies each unit within the context
of the entire county, the Gratiot Countywide Master
Planning Group began work on organizing a committee
structure for community participation. Current committees
include Historical Context, Physical Characteristics,
Demographics, Housing, Economy, Community Services,
Education, Roadways & Transportation, and Community
Collaboration. Greater Gratiot Development, Inc. President
and Chair of the Master Planning Group stated, “I
expect the planning effort to deliver a far superior
plan for the wider community than individual plans
would ever allow.” Community members interested in
participating may contact Greater Gratiot Development,
Inc. at (989) 875-2083.
The mission of the Partnerships for Change Sustainable
Communities program is effective preservation and
management of cultural and natural resources on a
statewide basis through inter-jurisdictional cooperation
and coordination in land use planning and management,
resulting in more efficient economic development through
an inter-jurisdictional focus on community-wide concerns.
Funding for Partnerships for Change Sustainable Communities
comes from the Americana, C.S. Mott and W.K. Kellogg
Foundations, and the Coastal Management Program of
the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
Partners include the Michigan Township Association,
Michigan Municipal League, Michigan Association of
Planning, and Michigan State University Extension.

Powell Fabrication & Mfg, Inc. to expand facilities
in St. Louis
Company continues to compete in global marketplace
Powell
Fabrication was established in 1964, currently employs
40 people and manufactures equipment used for the
production of bleach and the safe handling of chemicals.
The company broke ground Thursday on a 11,100 square
foot, 45 foot tall building addition that will allow
the company to expand production capacity for newly
designed, skid-mounted bleach production equipment
in Bethany Township, just east of St. Louis.
The
largest piece of equipment Powell produces currently
fills almost one half of the existing production area.
Powell employees, local elected officials, Greater
Gratiot Development, Inc. board and staff, bankers,
construction officials, and other distinguished guests
were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony.
A majority of household bleach, including Clorox
brand is produced on Powell equipment, designed and
manufactured in St. Louis. Their equipment has been
shipped to every continent of the planet except Antarctica,
and the company is able to remotely diagnose or operate
equipment anywhere in the world if it is connected
to the internet or a modem.
The company continuously works on new products and
improvements to existing systems. One such product
is an emergency valve closure system for rail cars
or tanker trucks shipping hazardous materials.
Duane Powell, CEO of Powell Fabrication & Manufacturing
noted, “Powell Fab & Mfg. has grown incrementally
over the years, and our success is due to the hard
work and commitment of our employees, many of whom
have been part of the Powell family for decades. We
certainly have the workforce talent right here in
the mid Michigan area.”
Greater Gratiot Development, Inc. assisted Powell
Fabrication through the Gratiot County Brownfield
Redevelopment program to analyze the former Royster
Fertilizer and Midwest Building Supply property for
potential environmental hazards related to the 1991
fire that destroyed the former Royster building. Minor
soil cover will be required on a small portion of
the property to mitigate future issues. GGDI has assisted
Powell with previous expansions over the years and
is excited to be a part of their continued growth.
Don Schurr, President of Greater Gratiot Development,
Inc. said, “Powell is a little known gem in the Gratiot
Community. All of us are connected to this company
in some way, as many of the everyday products we depend
on are produced on Powell equipment. The long term
vitality of the mid Michigan economy depends on the
growth of high technology companies like Powell. We
are proud partners in their growth and look forward
to continued success.”

Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Receives EPA Award
"Significant contribution to the EPA Region
5 Brownfields Program"
The
Gratiot County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority
shined this week at the National Brownfields Conference
in Detroit with an award from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) for a significant contribution
to EPA Region 5 Brownfields Program.
The award highlights Merrill Fabricators’
redevelopment of the former Oxford Automotive/Lobdell-Emery
plant in Alma. Recognition for the project relates
to the large and complex nature of the site, and the
bureaucratic hurdles that were overcome through close
cooperation between the EPA, Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality, the Brownfield Redevelopment
Authority of the County of Gratiot, AKT Peerless Environmental
Services, and Merrill Fabricators.
Total investment to date is more than
$4 million. The company expects to employ over 300
at the Republic Street plant by 2009. “A significant
environmental issue has been resolved, hundreds of
new jobs are being created, and the former powerhouse
of industry in Gratiot County has gotten a big boost
from Merrill Fabricators’ investment,” said Chelsey
Foster, Project Manager for Greater Gratiot Development,
Inc. and administrator of the Brownfield Authority.
“We are excited about the diversity they bring to
the region’s economy, and the synergistic opportunities
that are likely to develop between new and existing
industry.”
Merrill Fabricators fabricates complex,
high accuracy and high quality welded products for
a wide variety of industries. The Saginaw-based Merrill
Technologies Group family of companies includes Merrill

M&M Energy Chairman Muckleroy addresses Alma College
grads
Message to graduates: Focus on honor and integrity
Two
years ago Michael Muckleroy spoke at Alma College's
Center for Responsible Leadership and he was back
by popular demand Saturday for the commencement address.
The former Enron executive and one of the developers
of the proposed Great Lakes Energy and Research Park
in Alma kept his remarks short. Duty, honor and country
were his themes, and he said he didn't mean necessarily
participating in the military. But the former Navy
Seal did urge the class to "focus on what you
can do for your own country." He also suggested
that they get into politics, not necessarily as a
career, he said, "but there are things you can
do."
Honor, he said, is to be able to "look into
the mirror and honor the person that's looking back
at you. Tell the truth even if it hurts." He
told the truth at Enron and was, in his words, run
out of the company. He called it the greatest honor
he had ever received besides the honor the college
was granting him.
Mr. Muckleroy received an honorary Doctor of Letters,
presented by Dr. Mel Nyman, Alma mayor and Alma College
President Saundra Tracy.

Lakes Energy & Research Park in Alma, Gratiot
County, Michigan. Senate Majority Leader
Mike Bishop (R) led
the Lansing press conference, emphasizing the bold,
bipartisan initiative. Gratiot representatives, Senator
Roger Kahn (R) and Representative

and Mike Sawruk, spoke to the great
importance and timeliness of the legislative package
that will encourage this and many other clean energy
projects throughout Michigan. Local officials were
present to convey the readiness of Gratiot County
to accept the first major energy development of its
kind.
A
subsequent media event was held at the Alma Public
Library to highlight more specific details about the
project and recognize the immense collaborative efforts
that have taken place in Gratiot County to pave the
way for the Great Lakes Energy & Research Park.
Multiple governmental resolutions of support for the
project, interlocal infrastructure cost-sharing agreements,
and even countywide master planning efforts have been
embraced as a means to make the energy park the best
possible opportunity for the entire mid Michigan region.

Brownfield Recycling Brings $10 Million, 300 jobs to
Gratiot County
Gratiot
County is recycling to help build its local business
base. The word might evoke thoughts of bottles and
paper, but the county’s recycling has focused on land;
or, more specifically, developed properties. And,
Don Schurr, president of Greater Gratiot Development,
Inc., says the effort has brought the county about
$10 million in investments and created about 300 jobs.
Old developed properties, where the
original tenant has left, are called brownfield properties.
Oftentimes, there are lingering questions about environmental
damage left by the original owners, and there are
questions about who would be liable to clean up that
mess before a property owner could make use of it.

Welders likely to be in Demand
Displaced
workers may get an opportunity for a new career soon
when several groups get together to design a welding
training program. G-TEC, at least a half dozen local
businesses, Greater Gratiot Development Inc. and the
Alma Public Schools District are working on the project.
With the planned move of Merrill Fabricators
into Alma’s former Oxford Automotive plant this month,
welders will likely be in demand, said Dennis Dunlap,
career technical education administrator at G-TEC.
Companies already in the area employ welders, which
will increase the competition for workers.

Great Lakes Energy Research Park in Alma may get Federal
Boost
In
the bill just passed by the U.S. House of Representatives,
Alma's Great Lakes Energy Research Park is due to
receive $500,000.
The money, from the Energy and Water Appropriations
Act, can't be spent until the Senate - and the President
- also approve, U.S. Rep. Dave Camp's spokesman Sage
Eastman said.
... "It does a lot for the project," said
Don Schurr, President of Greater Gratiot Development.
"It elevates it to another level of discussion.
This helps demonstrate that it's not hypothetical...
For his part, developer Mike Sawruk said he is very
excited by the work and effort on Camp's part. "It's
a big step - a watershed event for the state,"
he said. "The federal government recognizes the
significance of this. We're starting to get some momentum
and we're making great progress."

Liberty Renewable Fuels begins Plant Construction, Equity
Drive
At
a gala ceremony Friday, the president of Liberty Renewable
Fuels said concrete is ready to be poured next week
on what is to be Michigan's largest ethanol plant
to date, built by Michigan contractors and owned primarily
by Michigan investors.
Liberty Board of Directors, state Sen. Roger Kahn
and Rep. Paul Opsommer, engineers, architects and
Gratiot County leaders gathered at the City of Ithaca/North
Star Township Renaissance Sub-Zone on Washington Road,
where the plant will open for business in 2008. The
ceremony preceded Friday night's first of a 60-city
series of informational meetings designed to attract
potential investments in the $185 million venture.
Liberty President David Skjaerlund said the 110-million
gallon per year production will represent corn grown
on farm fields and fuel pumped in Michigan gas tanks.
Liberty has partnered and signed multi-year agreements
with Michigan grain elevators such as Cooperative
Elevator, Auburn Bean and Grain and Brown Milling
in Mt. Pleasant. Most ethanol plants in this state
and others are built by Wall Street investors.
"This public offering is being offered to Michigan
residents," Skjaerlund said. "We're giving Main Street
Michigan a chance to invest on the ground floor. We
know of no other ethanol plant in Michigan that has
filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission
to allow a public offering in the state prior to plant
construction."
